Bio
Chris Wise has been working within the IT industry for 20 years, for the last 8 years specifically within cybersecurity for organisations in the UK as well as abroad. He has provided consultancy services for the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA), Homeland Security (UK), and the Ministry of Defence. Chris has given talks about online offending to professionals in the criminal justice system at key conferences, including for the British Psychological Society Forensic Psychology Division. Chris has a passion for security, privacy and helping non-technical professionals understand his area of expertise.

We will explore the online environment, examining the key differences between the standard internet and the Dark Web, particularly concerning accessibility, user anonymity, and the level of regulation. This includes understanding the Dark Web’s origins, notably its connection to US Navy/DARPA initiatives, and discussing its varied uses, which range from facilitating illicit activities to providing crucial platforms for protecting whistle-blowers and enabling communication free from censorship. We will also touch upon the landscape of Artificial Intelligence, introducing Large Language Models like ChatGPT and Gemini, alongside generative AI technologies for creating images and video, and briefly address the emergence of ‘DarkAI’ tools.
Furthermore, we will discuss the methods employed to identify and apprehend individuals engaged in online misconduct, including techniques used by law enforcement agencies, sting operations, and the tracking of digital footprints such as IP addresses. Building on this, we will outline strategies for informed risk management, covering the application of privacy-enhancing technologies, encryption, secure devices, and the importance of understanding digital license conditions. Finally, we will provide practical guidance on enhancing personal online safety, addressing issues like preventing doxing, utilising tools such as VPNs, managing social media privacy settings effectively, and maintaining device security.
