Workshop Description

Trainer: Michael Sheath

The training will consider the ideological and visceral links between mainstream adult pornography and sexually abusive norms and conduct. The presenter will suggest that we have entered a new anthropological and cultural age in respect to the accessibility of sexual imagery in the online environment, and that this is beginning to shift thresholds in relation to the tolerance and expression of sexual violence against both children and women.

The event will consider the work of Fiona Vera Grey et al in relation to ‘Sexual scripts’ in adult pornography, the work of Tony Ward in relation to ‘Child Molesters’ and rapists’ schema, together with his consideration of ‘Good Lives’ theory, and Heather Mills’ characterisation of online pornography viewing as an expression of ‘Control, Contempt, and Triumph.’

The Trainer will also offer some perspectives on the development of sexual templates, and how the last two decades have offered radically different experiences and influences to adolescents than those available hitherto. Psychological drivers for escalation and taboo breaking will be set out.
